'타이거킹' 열풍에 '경험자' 타이슨, "집에서 호랑이 키우는 것은 미친 짓"

[OSEN=이인환 기자] '경험자' 마이크 타이슨이 호랑이는 애완 동물에 어울리지 않다고 평가했다.
영국 '인디펜던트'는 지난 8일(한국시간) "마이크 타이슨이 과거 자신의 집에서 호랑이를 키웠던 것은 잘못됐던 일이다고 고백했다"고 보도했다.
봄이 왔지만 코로나로 인해 자유로운 외출은 언감생심이다. 결국 집에서 얌전히 볼 수 있는 넷플릭스가 반사 이익을 누리고 있다.
특히 미국서 가장 화제를 모으고 있는 것은 넷플릭스의 신작 다큐멘터리 '타이거 킹'이다. 호랑이를 비롯한 대형 고양이과 동물을 학대하고 집착하는 조 이그조틱이란 인물을 통해 미국 사회의 모순을 나타낸 작품이다.
조 이그조틱은 살인 청부 의뢰 및 동물 살해 혐의로 20년 형을 살고 있다. 타이거킹의 선풍적인 인기로 인해 타이거킹이 도널드 트럼프 대통령이 그를 기자 회견서 언급하기도 했다.
타이거킹이 큰 인기를 끌면서 호랑이와 인연이 깊은 타이슨 역시 관심을 받고 있다. 그는 1995년부터 자신의 자택에서 벵골 호랑이 네 마리를 키운 적이 있다.
타이슨은 과거 인터뷰서 호랑이를 얻기 위해 친구의 빚을 대신 내줬다라고 밝힌 바 있다. 그는 2000년대 초반 애완용 호랑이를 키우는 등 막대한 사치로 파산하기도 했다.
뿐만 아니라 타이슨은 장난으로 호랑이들에게 주먹을 날리는 기행을 벌이기도 했다. 심지어 호랑이들이 타이슨의 손님의 팔을 깨물기도 했다.
인디펜던트에 따르면 타이슨은 과거 자신이 호랑이를 자택에서 키운 것을 후회한다고 밝혔다. 그는 "호랑이를 100% 길들일 수는 없다"라고 술회했다.
타이슨은 "호랑이를 애완동물로 길들이는 일은 절대 일어나지 않을 것이다. 그들은 우연히 당신을 죽일 수 있다. 실수로 호랑이를 잘못 건드리면 죽는 것이다"라고 강조했다.
이어 "호랑이를 길들일 수 있다고 생각했던 내가 잘못했던 것이다. 나는 그들이 길들여졌다고 믿고만 있었다. 절대 집에 놔두면 안 됐다. 내가 틀렸다"고 반성했다.
호랑이를 키운 과거를 후회한 타이슨의 현 애완동물은 강아지다. 그는 강아지에게 '마스 타이슨'이라는 이름을 붙일 정도로 애지중지하고 있다.
