트럼프 "도쿄올림픽 개최 여부 아베가 곧 결정 내릴 것" (워싱턴 AFP=연합뉴스) 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 21일(현지시간) 백악관에서 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 대응 태스크포스(TF) 회의를 마친 후 가진 기자회견에서 질문을 받고 있다. 트럼프 대통령은 이날 회견에서 올 여름으로 예정된 도쿄 올림픽의 정상적 개최 여부에 관한 질문에 아베 신조 일본 총리가 결정할 일로 그가 곧 결정을 내릴 것으로 알고 있다고 답했다고 CNN은 전했다.
도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령은 오는 7월 24일 개막 예정인 도쿄올림픽 개최 문제와 관련, 아베 신조(安倍晋三) 일본 총리가 적절한 결정을 내릴 것이라며 그의 바람이 이끄는대로 미국의 참가 여부를 정할 것이라고 23일(현지시간) 말했다.
트럼프 대통령의 이날 발언은 아베 총리가 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 확산과 관련해 도쿄올림픽·패럴림픽의 연기 가능성을 처음으로 공식 언급한 이후에 나온 것이다.
트럼프 대통령은 이날 트위터에 올린 글에서 "우리는 일본에서 열리는 올림픽 게임에 참가하는 것과 관련해 미국의 아주 좋은 친구이자 올림픽 장소에 대해 훌륭한 일을 해 온 사람인 일본의 아베 총리의 바람에 따라 안내받을 것"이라고 밝혔다.
이어 아베 총리에 대해 "그는 적절한 결정을 내릴 것!"이라고 덧붙였다.
아베 총리는 현지시간으로 23일 도쿄올림픽·패럴림픽을 '완전한 형태'로 개최하기 어려울 경우 연기도 고려하겠다며 올림픽 연기론에 무게를 실었다. 아베 총리가 도쿄올림픽 연기 가능성을 공개적으로 언급한 것은 이번이 처음이다.
국제올림픽위원회(IOC)도 코로나19 대유행으로 도쿄 올림픽을 연기하는 방안이 하나의 선택사항이라며 내달까지 결론을 내놓을 것이라고 밝히는 등 연기 문제가 사실상 공식 논의에 들어간 단계이다.
앞서 트럼프 대통령은 지난 12일 코로나19 확산과 관련해 사견임을 전제로 "텅 빈 경기장으로 치르는 것보다는 1년 연기하는 편이 나을 것 같다"면서 "1년 늦게 연다면 무(無)관중으로 치르는 것보다 더 나은 대안이 될 수 있다고 생각한다"며 연기론에 불을 붙였다.
트럼프 대통령은 당시 이 발언 후 이뤄진 아베 총리와의 '전화 회담'이 끝나고 올린 트윗을 통해서도 "일본과 그들의 위대한 총리에게 좋은 일이 일어날 것"이라면서도 "많은 옵션이 있다!"고 언급, 올림픽 개최와 관련해 여러 선택지가 있을 수 있음을 시사했다.
트럼프 대통령은 다만 지난 21일 코로나19 대응 태스크포스(TF) 회의 후 가진 기자회견에서 관련 질문이 나오자 "분명히 연기, 아마 내년으로 연기하는 것을 포함한 선택지가 있다"면서도 "그것은 전적으로 그들에게 달려 있다. 나는 내가 영향을 미쳐야 한다고 생각하지 않았다"고 언급한 바 있다.

미국에서 뛰고 있는 일본 여자축구 대표 출신 선수가 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19)에 대한 우려로 2020 도쿄올림픽 성화 봉송을 거부했다.
미국 여자프로축구 스카이블루FC 소속의 일본인 공격수 가와스미 나호미(35)는 23일 자신의 사회관계망서비스(SNS)를 통해 "도쿄올림픽 성화 봉송 주자에서 사퇴한다"고 밝혔다.
가와스미는 2011년 국제축구연맹(FIFA) 독일 여자월드컵에서 함께 우승을 일군 일본 대표팀 멤버들과 26일 후쿠시마현의 J빌리지에서 시작하는 일본 내 도쿄올림픽 성화봉송 제1 주자를 맡을 예정이었다.
가와스미는 성화봉송을 스스로 포기한 데 대해 현재 미국에 거주하기 때문에 일본으로 이동하는 데 따른 위험을 고려했다고 설명했다.
그는 "(코로나19에) 나 자신이 감염되거나 감염원이 되지 않도록 하기 위해, 팀과 팬들에게 폐를 끼치지 않기 위해 결정했다"면서 "조속한 종식과 여러분의 건강을 진심으로 기원한다"고 적었다.
