사실 박사 조 모씨가 검거되면서 이 'N번 방'이라는 공간의 추악한 실체가 드러났지만, 이 N번 방이라는 범죄의 틀을 처음 만든 사람은 따로 있습니다.

그들 세계에서 '갓갓'이라는 대화명으로 알려진 인물인데요.

그가 어떤 인물인지 소문만 무성할 뿐, 베일에 가려져 있는데 경찰이 그의 뒤를 쫓고 있습니다.

구속된 '박사' 조모씨에 앞서 텔레그램상에서 'n번방'이라는 형식으로 성착취 동영상을 유포하기 시작한 사람은 닉네임 '갓갓'으로 불리는 인물입니다.

[성착취 텔레그램방 전 운영자] "2019년 2월경 '갓갓'이라는 닉네임이 'n번방'을 창설하게 되면서 널리 사람들에게 입에 오르게 되고 많이 퍼트려지게 되었습니다."

N번 방은 먼저 1번 방을 만들어 그곳을 통해 성착취 영상물을 공유하고, 이후, 2번 방, 3번 방 등 추가로 채팅방을 만들어, 결제를 한 사람에 한해 대화방 주소를 알려준 뒤, 기존 방과 다른 동영상 제공하는 방식입니다.

'갓갓'이 만든 이 'n번 방'을 모방해, '박사방'이라는 불법 채팅방이 만들어진 셈입니다.

N번방에 관여했던 인물들은 '갓갓'이라는 인물이 가장 악질적인 범죄를 많이 저질렀다고 기억합니다.

[성착취 텔레그램방 전 운영자] "첫 번째로 갓갓이 제일 악랄하고요. 두 번째는 박사. (갓갓을 뽑으신 이유는?) 갓갓의 대상은 주로 10대 청소년들이었기 때문입니다."

그러나 갓갓은 지난해 9월, 텔레그램을 삭제하고, 돌연 자취를 감췄고, "고등학생이었다" "이미 경찰에 검거됐다"는 등 확인되지 않은 소문들만 떠돌았습니다.

경찰은 현재 '갓갓'이라는 인물의 인터넷 아이피를 추적하며 , 범인의 신원을 특정하는데 수사력을 모으고 있습니다.

경찰 관계자는 "갓갓의 n번 방에 대한 수사가 가장 잘 되고 있다"며, "갓갓 빼고는 공범이나 불법 영상물을 다운로드 받은 사람 등 상당수가 검거가 됐다"고 설명했습니다.

경찰은 텔레그램이 외국에 기반을 둔 시스템인 만큼, FBI 등 외국 수사기관과도 긴밀히 협조해 관련자들의 신원을 특정할 계획입니다.
