'100% 임금보전' 없는 토트넘, 임시해고 구단 중 유일..비판 봇물

신종 코로나바이러스감염증(코로나19)가 유럽까지 덮치며 주요국 중 하나인 영국에도 비상이 걸렸다. 상황이 심각해지면서 잉글리시 프리미어리그(EPL) 등 주요 스포츠 대회의 중단을 결정하고 나섰다.

불가피한 결정이었다. 다만 일정이 멈추면서 EPL 및 여러 구단의 재정적인 피해를 구단이 감내해야 하는 상황이 왔다. 상당히 큰 규모의 인건비를 지출해야 하는 구단들은 대처방안을 찾아야 했다.

그러면서 가장 먼저 나온 것이 구단 일부 직원들에 대한 임시해고 조치였다. 영국 정부가 `일자리 보전 정책`을 들고 나온 것을 활용한 결정이었다. 해당 정책은 영국 내 기업 등이 직원에 대한 임시해고를 할 경우 임금의 80%를 정부가 부담해준다는 내용을 주로 하고 있었다. 1명당 월 2,500 파운드가 상한선이었다.

토트넘은 뉴캐슬, 본머스, 노리치 시티와 함께 이 정책을 활용한 구단 중 하나였다. 리버풀은 이들을 따라 임시해고 발표를 했다가 여론의 뭇매를 맞고 결정을 번복했다. 여러 상황에도 불구하고 토트넘은 자신들의 결정을 고수할 생각인 것으로 보인다. 토트넘은 550명의 비선수 직원의 임금 20%를 삭감하고 그중 40%는 임시해고하기로 결정한 바 있다.

다만 영국 `메일`은 "토트넘은 임시해고를 한 구단들 중 유일하게 정부 부담금 외 20%를 보조해주지 않았다. 이에 대해 임금삭감 압박을 받는 선수들까지 불만을 나타내고 있다"는 부분을 지적했다. 현재 몇몇 토트넘 선수들은 다니엘 레비 회장을 비롯한 수뇌부와 긴장 상태를 유지하고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.

토트넘 팬들의 반응도 싸늘하다. 영국 `미러`는 토트넘의 서포터스 트러스트(THST)의 반응을 전하기도 했다. 해당 보도에 따르면 THST 측은 "팬들의 목소리를 들어라"라며 구단의 결정을 비판했다. THST에 속한 한 팬은 SNS를 통해 "우리는 토트넘 계정에 지속적으로 해당 조치를 멈추고 재고해줄 것을 지속적으로 요청하고 있다. 이제 우리는 공개적이고 확실하게 `더 이상 구단의 명성을 더럽히지 말 것`을 말하고자 한다"면서 불만을 나타냈다.
