그의 인생은 파란만장했다. 어린시절 재일 한국인으로 겪어야 했던 모진 차별, 가난을 이기기 위해 선택한 야구, 일본 명문가의 데릴사위, 4개의 이름과 '너구리'라는 능글맞은 별명, 화려함 만큼이나 비참했던 말년. 그리고는 '낙엽은 가을바람을 원망하지 않는다'는 의미 있는 말을 남기고 우리 곁을 떠나갔다.

장명부는 4개의 이름을 지녔다. 1950년 일본 돗토리현에서 태어난 그의 첫 이름은 창씨개명한 마츠바라 아키오였다.

결혼하면서 처가의 성을 따라(이때 일본으로 귀화) 후쿠시 아키오로 바꾸었고, 다시 후쿠시 히로아키로 개명했다. 1983년 한국프로야구 삼미 슈퍼스타즈에 입단하면서 아버지(장득룡)가 물려준 장명부라는 이름을 되찾았다.

1983년 한 해 장명부가 보여준 활약은 경이로웠다. 다시 있을 수 없는, 어떤 면에선 있어서도 안 될 기록을 남겼다. 이해 장명부는 팀의 100경기 가운데 60경기에 등판했다.

던진 횟수는 자그마치 427⅓이닝(참고로 지난해 한국 프로야구 최다 투구 이닝은 린드블럼의 194⅔).

물론 427⅓이닝도 메이저리그 시즌 최다 투구 이닝(680·윌 화이트)에 비하면 약과다. 하지만 그 기록은 1879년에 세워졌다. 야구의 석기시대 시절이었다.

당시 화이트의 나이는 24살. 장명부는 33살이었다. 일본 프로야구 기록은 하야시 야스오가 1942년 세운 541⅓이닝. 일본 프로야구의 청동기 쯤 된다. 한국 프로야구 역대 2위는 최동원의 284⅔이닝이다.

장명부는 무려 44경기에 선발로 나왔다. 16경기는 구원등판. 44경기 가운데 36번을 완투했다. 완투승만 26차례(5완봉승 포함).

5월 한 달 동안 그는 9승이나 올렸다. 8월에는 완투승을 한 다음 날 경기서 2이닝을 던졌고, 그 다음 경기서 다시 2⅓이닝을 던졌다. 가을 야구가 아닌 정규 시즌 경기였다.

더 놀라운 것은 그 다음 날이었다. 장명부는 또 마운드에 올랐다. 그것도 마무리나 중간이 아닌 선발로. 그리고는 완투승을 기록했다.

이쯤 되면 철완이라는 말조차 무색하다. 그저 놀라울 따름. 장명부는 대체 왜 이런 미친 시즌을 보냈을까.

그를 자극한 것은 구단 사장의 말 한 마디였다. 장명부는 일본 프로야구 히로시마 카프의 에이스였다. 두 차례 15승을 기록했다. 1982년 허리 부상으로 3승에 그치자 트레이드설이 나왔다. 잽싸게 그를 낚아챈 것은 삼미 슈퍼스타즈였다. 창단 첫해 꼴찌를 한 삼미는 팀의 기둥 투수가 절실했다.

계약금 연봉 포함 총 4000만엔(약 4억5000만원·여러 가지 설이 있긴 하지만 공식 발표에 따랐다)을 받았다. 큰돈이긴 하지만 당초 삼미가 약속한 액수보단 턱없이 적었다.

장명부는 단단히 화가 났다. 기자회견서 예상 승수를 묻자 "30승은 할 수 있다"고 퉁명스럽게 답했다. 말도 안 되는 승수였다. 시즌 100경기가 전부인데 어떻게 30승을? 기자들도 대수롭지 않게 넘겼다. 허풍도 정도껏이라야지.

그날 저녁 자리에서 일이 벌어졌다. 구단 사장과 여럿이 어울려 함께 저녁을 먹었다. 술이 곁들여진 게 화근이었다. 낮에 있던 기자회견이 화제로 떠올랐다. 30승 얘기를 비웃기나 하듯 구단 사장이 "정말 해내면 보너스로 1억원을 주겠다"고 내뱉었다. 순간 장명부의 눈이 동그래졌다.
