노르웨이 올림픽위원회, IOC에 도쿄올림픽 개최 연기 요청

노르웨이 올림픽위원회가 국제올림픽위원회(IOC)에 올해 7월 개막 예정인 도쿄올림픽의 연기를 요구했다.

21일 dpa통신에 따르면 노르웨이 올림픽위원회는 이날 '신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19)이 진정세에 접어들 때까지 도쿄올림픽 개최를 미루자'는 의견을 담은 공문을 IOC에 발송했다.

도쿄올림픽은 7월 24일부터 8월 9일까지 열릴 예정이고 이후 8월 25일부터는 장애인올림픽이 이어진다.

그러나 최근 코로나19의 세계적인 확산에 따라 도쿄올림픽 개최 시기를 미뤄야 한다는 의견이 힘을 얻고 있다.

로이터통신은 "슬로베니아 올림픽위원회 보그단 가브로베치 위원장도 자국 뉴스 통신사 STA와 인터뷰에서 '코로나19로 인해 선수들이 올림픽 준비에 공평한 기회를 얻지 못하고 있으므로 대회를 연기해야 한다'는 입장을 밝혔다"고 보도했다.

가브로베치 위원장은 "2021년에 올림픽을 열어도 문제 될 것이 없다"며 1년 정도 개최 시기를 미뤄야 한다고 주장했다.

또 콜롬비아 올림픽위원회 발타사르 메디다 위원장 역시 로이터통신과 인터뷰에서 "IOC와 도쿄올림픽 조직위원회가 참가자들의 안전을 보장하지 못하면 대회 연기를 신중하게 검토해야 한다"고 밝혔다.

메디다 위원장은 "개인적인 의견 역시 연기해야 한다고 생각하고, IOC도 책임 있는 모습을 보일 것"이라며 "경기 일정을 지키기 위해 1만 명이 넘는 참가자들의 건강을 위험하게 할 수는 없다"고 주장했다.

토마스 바흐 IOC 위원장은 20일 미국 신문 뉴욕타임스와 인터뷰에서 "현재 다른 시나리오도 검토하고 있지만 올림픽이 4개월 정도 남은 지금 시점에 어떤 결정을 내리는 것은 무책임한 일"이라며 현재로서는 올림픽 연기 계획이 없다고 밝혔다.

한편 교도통신은 21일 도쿄올림픽 조직위원회 엔도 도시아키 부위원장이 노르웨이 올림픽위원회의 서한에 대한 질문을 받고 "조직위는 올림픽 취소나 연기를 결정하는 단체가 아니다"라며 "최종 결정은 IOC가 하고, 조직위는 대회를 7월에 개막하기 위해 준비하는 단체"라고 답했다고 보도했다.
