각 리그가 코로나19 여파로 중단되면서 6월 계약 만료를 앞둔 선수들이 난감한 상황에 놓였다. 겨울 이적시장을 통해 RCD마요르카로 이적한 기성용도 마찬가지다.
기성용은 지난달 스페인 라리가의 마요르카로 이적했다. K리그 복귀를 추진했지만 무산되면서 해외로 눈을 돌렸고, 때마침 마요르카가 손을 내밀었다. 기성용은 적지 않은 나이에도 불구하고, 고심 끝에 스페인 무대에서 첫 도전을 결심했다.
그러나 기성용의 라리가 도전은 시작부터 제동이 걸렸다. 코로나19가 빠르게 확산되면서 라리가가 2주간 중단됐기 때문이다.
기성용은 지난 7일(이하 한국시간) 에이바르 원정에서 후반 37분 교체 투입돼 데뷔전을 치렀다. 당초 일정대로라면 마요르카는 16일 홈에서 바르셀로나와 `2019/2020 스페인라리가` 28라운드 경기를 치를 예정이었다. 리오넬 메시와 기성용의 맞대결이 성사될 수도 있었지만, 다음을 기약하게 됐다.
라리가는 현재 3월 말 리그 재개를 목표로 하고 있다. 하지만 유럽도 코로나19의 직격탄을 맞은 상황이라 리그가 언제 재개될 지 장담할 수 없다. 마요르카와 4개월 단기 계약을 맺은 기성용도 난감한 상황이다. 기성용은 마요르카와 6월 말에 계약이 만료되는데, 리그 중단이 장기화될 경우 계약이 꼬이게 된다.
기성용과 동병상련인 선수가 112명이나 된다. 스페인 `아스`는 15일 "7월까지 리그 경기를 치르게 될 경우 문제에 놓이게 되는 라리가 선수는 총 112명이다. 바르셀로나를 제외한 19개 팀에 문제가 생긴다"고 보도했다. 다수의 팀이 6월 말 선수들을 대거 잃게 되는데, 두 손 놓고 있을 수 없는 상황이다.
스페인 축구연맹의 루이스 루비알레스 회장은 `아스`를 통해 "정해져있는 대응 방법이 없는 상황이다. 이에 대한 해결책을 마련해야 한다"면서 "이번이 선례가 될 것이기 때문에 신중한 결정을 내려야 한다. 선수들의 계약 기간은 6월 30일에 끝나지만, 특별한 조치를 취할 수 있다"며 6월 30일 계약 만료를 앞둔 선수들의 거취에 대한 논의를 시작했다고 했다.
라리가에서 이미 활약해 온 선수들의 경우엔 타격이 덜하지만, 기성용은 이번 시즌 후반기를 통해 자신의 능력을 증명해야 하는 '늦깎이 신입생'이었다. 짧은 기간 동안 가치를 보여줘야 마요르카에서 재계약을 제시받거나, 다른 라리가 구단의 러브콜을 이끌어낼 수 있었다. 기성용은 라리가 어느 선수보다도 난감한 처지다.
컨디션 관리 측면에서도 기성용의 타격은 유독 크다. 다른 선수들은 시즌 진행 중 리그가 중단됐기 때문에 당분간은 감각 유지가 가능하다. 반면 기성용은 공백기 끝에 에이바르전을 가졌고, 연달아 경기에 출장하며 감각을 끌어올려야 하는 타이밍이었다. 이때 리그가 중단되며 '감각 회복 프로그램'이 원점으로 후퇴해 버렸다.

이번에는 팬 조롱으로 논란을 일으켰다. 영국 언론 데일리스타는 16일(한국시각) '호날두는 별장 근처에서 기다리고 있던 팬과 언론을 놀리며 시간을 보내고 있다. 호날두는 자신의 채널을 통해 영상을 공개했다. 호날두는 집 주변에 모여있는 사람들을 보기 위해 재빨리 커튼 밖을 훔쳐보는 장면을 공개했다. 호날두는 건방지게 고개를 불쑥 내밀고선 팬들에게 씁쓸한 미소를 지어보였다. 이후 불과 몇 초 만에 다시 자기 방으로 사라졌다'고 보도했다.
한편, 호날두는 개인 SNS(소셜네트워크서비스)에 '축구 선수가 아니라 아들이자 아버지로서 말하고 싶다. 우리는 세계보건기구와 정부의 조언을 따르는 것이 중요하다. 인간의 생명 보호가 무엇보다 우선돼야 한다. 나는 내 동료 루가니처럼 코로나19와 싸우고 있는 사람, 코로나19 퇴치를 위해 노력하는 사람들에게 지지를 보낸다'고 적었다.

키움, 2군 선수 발열증상으로 1·2군 훈련 중단

키움 히어로즈가 1,2군 선수단 훈련을 중단했다.
키움은 16일 고척스카이돔에서 자체 청백전을 치를 예정이었다. 그러나 이날 2군인 고양 선수 중 한 명이 고양국가대표야구훈련장에서 훈련 전 체온을 잰 결과 38.3도가 나와 선별진료소로 이동했다. 매뉴얼에 따라 1,2군 선수단 훈련이 중단됐다.
키움 선수단은 지난 13일,14일 고양훈련장에서 전체 훈련을 진행했다. 시간대는 달랐지만 이날 1,2군 선수단이 같은 훈련장을 사용했기 때문에 1군 선수단도 16일 예외 없이 훈련하지 않았다.
키움 관계자는 "선수들은 모두 귀가해 자체 자가격리에 들어갔다. 발열 증상이 나타난 선수의 검진 결과가 나타날 때까지 훈련을 실시하지 않을 예정"이라고 설명했다.
